  1. It Takes Two! - Secondary Radiator R&D, Part 1: Factory Review and 3D Models

It Takes Two! - Secondary Radiator R&D, Part 1: Factory Review and 3D Models

Whether we're talking about turbochargers on an F-150 EcoBoost, V8 engines in an offshore powerboat, drummers in the Allman Brothers Band, or pieces of Carvel™ Ice Cream Cake for dessert on my birthday, sometimes two is a better option than one. This was very much the school of thought that Ford's engineers adopted when designing the cooling system on the 2011+ F-Series Super Duty trucks, including the F-350, F-450, and F-550. These trucks feature two systems that work in parallel to handle all of the cooling needs in your truck, and both are equally important.

Our engineers at Mishimoto also see the value in the "two can be better than one" mindset. When we bought our Mustang GT, we didn't stop there - we bought a turbo model, too. Many of you may know that we have already released a

ReSpiration Focal Point - Intake R&D, Part 1: Stock Intake

Finally!! Ford has teased us with the prospect of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) Focus RS for the US since the early 2000's. Now, in 2016, it is finally here and in our garage. This is pretty groundbreaking considering that no Ford with an RS badge ever made its way to American soil, and they were not hot-hatches to ignore. The label had particularly dominated the rally world. Who can forget the infamous Escort RS Cosworth rally car with its countless podium finishes or the Focus RS WRC that won back-to-back manufacturer titles in 2006 and 2007? We at Mishimoto haven't, and we're glad to be reveling in all the mechanical glory that is Ford's newest, AWD, turbocharged hot hatch.

Besides Ford providing us with a vehicle name that carries endless puns and name plays, this RS is packed with goodies, making it hard to pick an area to focus on because there are so many awesome features (I promise, that will be the only pun.). Although this RS shares its heart with the Mustang EcoBoost,

Let Your Ponies Be Heard - Exhaust Component R&D, Part 6: Test Results

In our last post, we took a look at the axleback fabrication process. Now that our prototypes are on the GT and ready to rock, it is on to testing! While we were not expecting much in the power department out of these exhaust options, we still wanted to see how they sound on the dyno.

Auxiliary Rads Forever - Auxiliary Radiator R&D, Part 2: 3D Models

2016+ Camaro Auxiliary Radiator Dicsounted Pre-Sale has begun!

For as long as there have been stories, there have been heroes. Likewise, almost every hero has a sidekick (if he's lucky, at least). This concept spans a breadth of traditional mediums and relationships: George had Lenny, Aladdin had Abu, Jak had Daxter, and the Fresh Prince had Jazzy Jeff. I think we can all agree that the 2016+ Camaro SS is the hero in this story, but in this chapter, our hero is the cooling system, and it just got one step closer to having TWO awesome sidekicks (What a concept!  If only Caesar had one good sidekick to talk some sense into Brutus!)  Of course, I'm talking about Mishimoto's 2016+ Camaro SS Auxiliary Radiators. If you aren't familiar with the Camaro's unique cooling system, you can learn all about it in our

As I sit here, isolated from the blistering humidity of a mid-Atlantic summer within the walls of our New Castle, DE office, I can't help but to appreciate the hell out of our A/C and the cooling - *ahem*, heat rejection (gotta keep the engineers happy) - that it provides. Just this past week, certain guests and goings-on have necessitated my spending quite a bit of time outside in the sweltering heat, and this drastic variance in climate really does have an effect on my ability to work well - just don't tell my supervisor!

    Anyway, such temperature deviations

God Only Knows (how much oil's in your intake) - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

There's nothing quite like plopping oneself into the car to leave work on a summer evening, beach-bound and brimming, windows down, to the tune of the sunset vibes that arrive hand-in-hand with the heavy midsummer air of July. Our Mishimoto R&D facility is located in New Castle, DE, and around here, people tend to favor numerous seaside towns in Southern New Jersey or in Delaware.

A true slice of Americana, an evening stroll down the main drag of a typical east coast beach town is sure to leave anyone with a faint smile, humming "Surfin USA" and craving more frozen custard, or maybe another gin and tonic. The competing smells of crisp, briny sea air and sweet, fried funnel cake assuage the senses, while the voices of The Beach Boys emanate lazily and intermittently from the windows of passing cars. That's right west coasters, we have beaches here too, and we also have surfer girls, boardwalks, waves to catch, and even the occasional deuce coupe or

"The TurboChevy" - Intake R&D, Part 1: The Stock System

Chevy really decided to make history with this brand-new Camaro. It has the smallest motor ever offered in a Camaro and also marks the first Camaro with a four-cylinder power-plant since the third generation. This is also the first time any Camaro has been offered with a factory-installed turbocharger. To put that in perspective, the last time any Chevy even offered a factory-turbocharged, rear wheel drive vehicle with a manual transmission was back in the 1960's with the Corvair! My parents weren't even out of grade school yet!

This 2.0L turbocharged LTG Ecotec motor puts out a factory-rated 275hp with 295ft-lbs of torque at the crank. If you haven't already, see below for a quick clip of the stock dyno pulls we made on this car to see what numbers we were able to get!

Gotta Keep em' Separated - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

The Focus RS is a big hit at the Mishimoto headquarters, and we want to make sure to protect our newest addition. If you missed Kyle Mohan testing out the Focus RS drift mode, check out our Focus RS Drift Video. Luckily one of the first projects up to bat is our direct-fit baffled oil catch can. We know that the necessity of an oil catch can is a hotly debated topic among many car communities, and the Focus RS is no exception. From previous projects and research online, we've learned that blow-by is a real presence in these EcoBoost engines.

    BRZ/FR-S Black Fan Shroud Pre-Sale

With every revolution of our planet around the sun, things change. Change can be minute or monumental; previously unimaginable trends surface, while established empires fall. Fresh movements are founded, archaic ideas become obsolete - existing products are refreshed, old products are pulled from the shelves (but sometimes *thankfully* added back on - I'm hungry and envisioning a bowl of French Toast Crunch™). Be it little or large, history progresses, and it remains ceaselessly amazing to me to see how much of a difference even a subtle change often makes.

Just about a year ago, Mishimoto released our plug-n-play fan shroud kit for the then-Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. This fan shroud has been extremely popular

  10. Bye-Bye Blow-By - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Evaluation

    Bye-Bye Blow-By - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Evaluation

We have begun developing a catch can system for the 2015+ Ford F150 EcoBoost! This project, although small (in components), could have a significant impact on the F150 EcoBoost market. Why? There are not many direct-fit options, and there are a lot of these trucks out there. Oil blow-by can be pretty serious, especially on turbo applications, and this truck is twin turbocharged! Nonetheless, many gearheads tend to question the merits of using a catch can. So before we go any further, let's briefly explain what a catch can actually does and why it's so beneficial!

    Port vs. Direct Injection

With port-injected engines, the fuel injectors are inside the intake manifold and produce the fuel stream that mixes with the air. This mixture is shot into the combustion chamber,
