With so many model years to cover, our biggest challenge would be making one cooler fit them all. But we had a plan.
Our 2001-2014 Chevy / GMC Duramax transmission cooler blog so far has focused on the two stock coolers. We looked at the early, comically small, transmission cooler. We looked at the later, and larger but poorly placed, transmission cooler. Finally, after almost a year of R&D, we get to look at Mishimoto's solution to the stock coolers' shortcomings. But first, we need to take a closer look at one more of the stock components.

At the end of our last post, we mentioned wanting to use one large cooler to fit all 14 model years from 2001-2014. We also mentioned that doing so presented some challenges. The biggest of those challenges would be to adapt the stock transmission cooler lines to the hose barbs on our stacked plate cooler. With many other trucks, this would be a

No matter how many trucks I write about, I'm always surprised how often a critical part of the drivetrain is underdeveloped. It's even more surprising when a truck built for towing and hauling has a major flaw in the transmission system. The transmission is the heart of towing, and when you're asking it to carry over five tons of truck and trailer up a grade, any weakness in the system is sure to show itself. However, the Allison transmission mated to 2001-2014 Duramax engines is not that weak point.

The transmission cooler equipped on the 2001-2014 Duramax trucks could honestly be described as "dainty." That's not a word that any owner wants to hear when talking about a part of their truck, especially not a part they rely on to keep driving. In 2006, when an extra gear was added to the Allison transmission, Chevy/GMC equipped a larger transmission cooler but, for some reason, decided

Extreme heat is always the enemy, especially when it comes to vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. The Allison gearbox mated with your 6.6L Duramax is no exception. With the high temperatures produced by an automatic transmission, it seems almost cruel that the sweltering summer heat comes when most of the towing of campers, boats, and other outdoor toys happens. GM did include some help to keep your gears cool. Unfortunately, it's a little small.

For such an iconic towing machine, it seems strange to equip it with such a small transmission cooler.

While the 9 rows on the factory cooler keep the transmission cool enough during regular driving, it shows its limited cooling abilities once a few thousand pounds are attached to the rear of the truck.
Before we start with the adorably small transmission cooler on the GM Duramax, some of you might be wondering why this extra
