Before we attempted the initial design, we first took a good look at the stock Y-pipe design. Although the spaced ports provide dispersion of air throughout the stock core, we saw immediately that this portion of the design needed improvement.

Kevin, our lead engineer for this project, began by taking measurements of the stock engine bay and intercooler. He used these measurements to begin developing a Solidworks model that would emulate the direction we wanted to go with the overall design. Once the model was completed, it was time to utilize our 3D printer to create a prototype. The initial prototype would be used primarily to test fitment and check clearance before we developed a final prototype. Because this was

With our design essentially solidified, and our prototypes ready to be put into action, it was time to perform another test fit and gather data. Lucky for us, one of our new engineers (Steve) happens to daily drive an Evo 9, and we talked him into allowing us to use his car for development. Steve's Evo is making around 350 hp to the wheels with a few modifications and quite a helping of boost. This should be a great vehicle for our second round of testing.

    Product Introduction and Goals

Our team has received numerous requests for a reasonably priced, high-performance aluminum radiator for the new-age Pontiac GTO. After reviewing the project and evaluating the current offerings available, we found a vacancy in the market. Our target would be to design a direct-fit unit that provides additional cooling and reliability over the stock radiator with plastic end tanks, while still maintaining a reasonable price point. Although it was available for only a few years in the States, the Pontiac GTO (OK, it's a Holden) was a seriously unique vehicle. The LS engine combined with an optional manual gearbox was ideal for a quick street car or a fun weekend track or autocross car. These cars may be a touch heavy, but thanks

The Bugeye, Blobeye, and Hawkeye Subarus have always been a prime choice for a fun daily driver or project vehicle. With a burbley turbocharged flat-four and a robust AWD system, it is hard to beat the overall value of these early models. Nonetheless, the performance aftermarket is massive with documentation available for building your car from mild to wild. Key components to the aftermarket success are the large enthusiast groups such as NASIOC and IWSTI that provide a great place for swapping information on repairs and modifications, and also general discussions about why these cars are so great! These Subarus provide a great base for entry into the racing world, whether it be rallycross, autocross, or track days. Reasonably inexpensive

It is hard to argue with the masses who rave about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. A turbocharged, AWD, rally-inspired chassis wrapped in a tastefully designed and aggressive body is enough to provoke envy in anyone, enthusiast or not.

During the past few years, we’ve kept a close eye on the Evolution forums and enthusiast groups, and we’ve also kept tabs on the success of our current

With positive horsepower data and an impressive intake tone, all our goals were met, so it was time to move towards project completion. We set out to finalize the design, finishes, and construction of our production units and, as you can see below, they turned out quite well. This will be offered in three finishes including polished aluminum, wrinkle-red, and wrinkle-black. Each kit includes an intake pipe with air straightener and MAF housing, a Mishimoto high-flow air filter, a heat shield, a silicone coupler, clamps, and all hardware necessary for installation.

Finally, we come to the sound improvements that the Mishimoto intake provides. Everyone loves a nice throaty intake sound, almost as much as the intoxicating burble from a set of unequal-length headers. During our many dyno pulls, collection of data for decibel strength was something we wanted to explore and compare between the factory design and our design.

It was now time to see the fruits of our labor and collect some data with our revised design. Our poor STI was once again strapped to the dyno (This is what it’s built for, right?) and endured pull after pull as we evaluated power, AFRs, sound improvements, and durability. Weeks of testing resulted in a design that not only pleased our engineers, but also excited them to see some enthusiasts install and use it. Bolting on 25 whp has never been easier, and this intake shows gains through the entire power band.

    Subaru WRX/STi Performance Cold-Air Intake

With our initial designs complete and fully assembled, the engineers were ready for testing. We strapped our STI to the dyno and began making some initial pulls with the car completely stock and using the OEM intake. We were averaging upper 250s to lower 260s at the wheels, which was what we expected from this car. After having some fun we removed the factory intake system, including the airbox, air induction tube, and MAF housing. We bolted on our first design and made a few pulls. We found that the air/fuel ratio (AFR) was a bit on the lean side for our tastes, so after a few runs we decided to call it quits for the day and reevaluate this design. Bolting on the second design provided slightly improved AFRs, but they were still at a point where we were
