    Cooling the Cummins- Radiator R&D, Part 1: Stock Evaluation

    Since Mishimoto's inception, we have grown to become more than just a radiator manufacturer; have expanded to offer many other performance parts for a variety of applications. For the Titan alone we already offer a several products, including an intercooler pipe and boot kit, exhaust, and coolant filtration kit. We have not, however, forgotten our roots. That being said, we have begun developing a radiator for our Nissan Titan XD.

    What improvements will we make?

    The stock radiator is sizeable compared to other stock units we have seen, but we still found some areas where we can improve on the factory design.

    One of my favorite things about working for Mishimoto is the sheer breadth of our many different projects. We're working on much more than only Chevy parts! Our garage always contains some interesting combination of trucks, hot hatches, muscle cars, and more. With all that fun stuff just meters away (separated from me by nothing more than a thin layer of clear glass, no less), it's a small wonder I get anything done around here.

    All this considered, I still occasionally receive some form of the following response after telling people where I work. "Oh yeah, I know Mishimoto. They make radiators, right?"

    When we left off last time, I teased you a bit with a couple of 3D models representing the possible directions in which we might be taking the Mishimoto Camaro SS auxiliary radiator design. We have continued the discussion among our engineering team and have not yet come to a conclusion on how to proceed. We have, however, taken action to explore both options in greater depth.

    We felt that fitment and compatibility with stock radiator ducting is definitely one of this project's more important considerations, so we wanted to get an idea of how the two designs compared in this regard; the more information we can gather, the better!     Last time, we took a look at the unique design of the Ford 6.7 secondary Super Duty radiator and its accompanying thermostats. Our last post was only about two weeks ago, but I come bearing some good news - plus, great things come in twos.

    Why does my primary rad need a companion?

    As a recap, this heat exchanger, found in 2011+ Ford Super Duty trucks, works as an integral part of a mostly independent secondary cooling system that manages many of the truck's auxiliary cooling needs, including those of the liquid-to-liquid charge air cooler. Cooling these engine components more efficiently should not only prolong their useful lives, but also may make for some nice performance benefits if coupled with a tune - who doesn't love colder charge air?
