    Fresh Air for the Fiesta! ST Performance Intake R&D, Part 1: Stock Intake & Data Collection

    Automotive passion has evolved over the years, and is still very much alive and well. A lot of this is a result of automakers continually bringing us the best in technology, innovation, and performance. Some will complain that modern automobiles are numb, boring, and full of complicated electronics and gizmos. Whatever your take on this is, one thing is certain. People still love cars, and the impulse to modify vehicles is as strong as it has ever been.

    Take the Fiesta ST for example. A compact hatchback, front-wheel drive, economical vehicle. A few bolt-on modifications can turn this into a tire-shredding, corner-carving autocross monster. It is all in how you approach new technology. You can embrace it and take advantage of what we have available in today's age, or you can curse electronic fuel injection, discredit independent rear suspension, and continue to rip around your hometown streets in your SBF-powered Cougar. Not that there is anything wrong with this. The key here is acceptance,

    Mishimoto Ford Fiesta ST Oil Cooler Kit

    Testing time! It's always fun to see the results when you make changes to your vehicle, whether bolting on a new wheel and tire combo, or installing a  new set of  dampers. In this case, we are expecting our Fiesta ST oil cooler setup to drop fluid temperatures by a substantial margin during our on-road testing.

    Testing Setup and Conditions

    Testing the stock Fiesta ST oil cooler is relatively simple. Only one temperature and pressure will need to be monitored, so we can utilize our sandwich plate sensor adapter shown below.

    First Prototype: Sound

    We're starting this article with a recap of Part 1 of this series, which highlighted our first prototype for the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost exhaust design. If you recall, this design featured a midmuffler as well as two rear mufflers.

    We promised a sound clip of our first design, so check it out below!

    As you can hear, this setup is not quite what we are looking for. Although our mufflers are more free-flowing compared to the stock units, the sound of the EcoBoost is still stifled quite a bit. In fact, actual noise increases over the stock exhaust setup are minimal and nearly unidentifiable.

    Unleashing The EcoBoost. Downpipe Development, Part 3: First Prototype Presentation and Test Fitting

    It is quite an exciting week here at Mishimoto. Yes, that's right " our first prototypes of the Mustang EcoBoost downpipe assemblies have arrived and are ready for test fitting and some road testing! Our extensive 3D-modeling design work has paid off with some very nice downpipe prototype pieces. No more delay, on to the images!

    First Prototype Images

    Our first prototypes include both a catted downpipe and a catless downpipe. Each unit features a two-piece design for easy install, a slip-joint connection between the two pieces, and a V-band connection at the rear cat-back connection point.

    We will start with a look at the upper portion of the downpipe that mates with the turbocharger. First, our catless pipe.

    We've been posting on the Fiesta ST forums for some time now, talking about our upcoming products (Fiesta ST aluminum radiator and Fiesta ST oil catch can system), reading through build threads, and requesting recommendations from the community. One of the most requested components is a direct-fit Fiesta oil cooler solution. Luckily for ST enthusiasts, we are extremely familiar with this product, as validated by the 21 direct-fit kits our engineering team has designed and tested thus far.

    Keep Your Intake Clean - Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 2: Bracket Fabrication

    After removing both catch cans for data collection in our previous post, we discussed the idea of relocating the bracket that holds the PCV catch can to a different area in the engine bay. We mentioned earlier that we were toying with the idea because the current location of the Fiesta ST catch can raised some concerns. One of them being that the current location for the catch can would interfere with right-hand drive (RHD) applications of the Fiesta ST, and we want this catch can to be all inclusive. In addition, it came to our attention later on that it would also interfere with some aftermarket intakes.  We try to take common Fiesta ST parts upgrades into consideration so that the products we make will fit all Fiesta STs. The consensus was that because there was a bit more room further forward in the engine bay to relocate the catch can, that would be the way to go.

    Keep your intake clean - Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Introduction and Fabrication

    So far this Fiesta ST has had an interesting life with Mishimoto. The very same day that we drove it off the lot, it was rolled into our development facility and fitted for its first modification: a prototype baffled catch can kit. Why did we chose to begin with this? From our experience with other EcoBoost equipped vehicles, we know how prone these engines are to blow-by and carbon buildup. If you want to read more in depth about the benefits of a catch can, check out our complete write up on Blow-By 101. Installing a catch can right away allows us to protect the engine of our new development vehicle and gives us more time for data collection as we work on developing additional Fiesta ST parts. Last, but certainly not least of all, we asked for your feedback and received an overwhelming response to create a Fiesta ST catch can (yes we do listen to you!).

We could not ignore this vehicle's little brother, the Fiesta, and after numerous requests we decided it was time to start development of new performance Fiesta ST parts.

    If you follow any of the product development going on here at Mishimoto, you should have noticed our recent concentration on the Ford Mustang EcoBoost. So far we've developed, tested, and perfected a variety of awesome new components, including the list below.

    The next target on our list will help your EcoBoost breathe a little easier, in the form of a larger-diameter and better-flowing cat-back exhaust. This is especially helpful for vehicles with aftermarket tuning packages.
