Back From Pasture - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.7 Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 3 - PCV-Side Production Sample and Test Results

Just like the wild stallion that the truck is named for, our donor Bronco stampeded back through our R&D facility after its preliminary 1000-mile test. While it was galavanting, though, our engineering team wrapped up the finishing touches on our kit to get it ready for the streets and trails.

The makeover started with our bracket. When we last left off, our prototype bracket was sporting a more universal design, with mounting holes encircling the top of the bracket. However, since this is a direct fit application, Ye made sure to utilize only the can mounting holes needed for the 2.7L so the ports will always face in the correct direction.

The orientation of the can is vital for the perfect fitment of our lines. Our prototype lines might not have appeared in our last post but were still in need of some finishing touches. Typically during the R&D process, our engineers piece together sections of hosing to create the desired path of our catch can lines. This works for proof of concept, but it's not exactly pretty, so Ye created a pair of application-specific J30R7 lines complete with OEM-style quick disconnect fittings, making them the perfect fit for the 2.7L.

Even with such a utilitarian vehicle like the Bronco, there's still a delicate balance between form and function.

Now for the main reason, we're here, the preliminary testing results. In the 1000 miles, our PCV-side catch can captured approximately 3-4ml of blow-by. This might not seem like much, and it's never a bad thing to have less blow-by in the catch can. Still, in either case, this blow-by collection will only increase over time, incurring carbon build-up that detracts from your Bronco's performance and efficiency, even with the 2.7L's dual injection setup.

Lower blow-by quantities are always a good sign, especially on a new engine. Blow-by collection amounts will also vary on driving style, the current weather, and the general climate in which you're operating the vehicle.

The Bronco is back, and Ford built its latest iteration of the legendary off-roader up to the standards they base their motto on, but defense against blow-by is still a necessity. Blow-by and carbon build-up are stubborn, but the addition of a catch can in your Bronco's PCV system curbs that tenacity. So make sure that you grab yours today:
