FAQ | Carbon Fiber Intercooler FAQ
Q: Why would I want carbon fiber end tanks on an intercooler? Is the carbon fiber just for looks? A: Forming the end tanks from carbon fiber allowed us to reallocate the weight saved over aluminum end tanks into a more efficient core. That means our carbon fiber intercooler is up to 34.9% more efficient than a comparable tube-and-fin intercooler, without weighing more. Q: How are these constructed without adhesive? A: Our end tanks are joined to the core without any adhesive. The patent-pending mechanical connection between the core and the end tanks is designed to allow the core to expand and contract as it heats and cools while maintaining a seal against boost pressure. Q: How strong is this carbon fiber compared to a regular aluminum intercooler? A: The 3K twill-woven carbon fiber we use for our end tanks is stronger than aluminum at nearly 1/4 of the weight. The end tanks were tested by a third party laboratory to exceed SAE J400 standards for gravel impacts, meaning they're strong enough to be front and center on your vehicle without worrying about road debris. If it won't crack an aluminum end tank, it won't crack our carbon fiber end tanks. Q: What happens if I exceed the recommended boost pressure? Will the ends tanks fracture? A: Our end tank clamping system allows for a flexible seal up to 32 psi of boost pressure. If that boost pressure is exceeded, the end tanks will simply vent the excess pressure through the seal and return to a sealed state when the pressure drops to rated levels. Because there's no adhesive or rigid sealant to fail, exceeding the recommended boost limit will not permanently damage the end tanks. Q: Wouldn't a heavier core cool be better? A: Effective heat transfer can be achieved by adding more mass to the core, but it can also be achieved by utilizing the core's mass more effectively. Our tube-and-fin core is denser than comparable cores, and we use every square-inch of that density to cool the charge air. Louvered external fins and offset internal fins circulate air across more of the tube, effectively increasing the cooling surface area without adding more mass. These details allow our core to be 34.9% more efficient than larger cores while weighing less. |
